I miss typewriters. I miss the heavy, satifsying weight of the keys and the sound and sweep of the metal arms striking the paper. This fall we celebrate a technology gone for good. Another great display by Mallory!

Do Your Own Printing Cover (1936)
We recently came into unexpected custody of what appears to be a 1936 letterpress printer. The booklet is wonderfully informative, especially the page entitled What a Printing Outfit Will Do For You, which includes this exerpt: “BOYS: Parents, teachers and friends should help boys and young men to buy presses. The use of the press not only gives them pocket money and a knowledge of business, but it improves grammar, punctuation and spelling….Many important men in this country started as boy editors…”
No mention of what the girls should do.

Or how about this from The Fascination of the Printing Press: “Many people are turning to printcraft for relaxation from the cares and fatigue of the office, factory, store or studio. He who has not experienced the unforgettable sensation of taking the first proof from a form of type made ready by himself has missed one of the ‘thrills that come once in a lifetime.’”
No indication of where that last quote derives from.
