real weddings #1: Regina & Brian, NYC

For years, we’ve been sharing the save the dates and invitations of the wonderful, creative, and loving couples who we’ve had the pleasure of working with — from vintage postcards for a sweet pair getting married at a farm in Vermont, to engraved hand calligraphed invites for a classic couple tying the knot in Mexico, to a letterpressed Brooklyn Bridge for a local bride and groom’s New York nuptials. But, have you ever wondered … what’s behind the paper?

Well, we couldn’t be more thrilled to begin answering that question today, as we unveil (pun intended) our very first real wedding. We’re officially kicking off the series, where we’ll be introducing you to some of our incredible brides and grooms, and giving you a peek into their wedding inspiration, their paper goodies, and of course, the big day itself!

These two met in a bookstore. Really!

Now, without further ado, we’d like to introduce you to Regina and Brian, who first met in a bookstore (yes, we know, we thought it was the sweetest thing ever too …) and opted for a fun-filled wedding just this past May at The Foundry in Long Island City. They came to us with a whole lot of ideas and a whole lot of enthusiasm, and you won’t believe what they left with. From library cards to comic strips, read on as Regina and Brian share their paper story …

SEVEN WORDS

Here at Lion in the Sun, we’ve created this little concept that choosing 7 words to describe your wedding – 3 colors and 4 adjectives – can help couples create a cohesive vision for their big day, and keep them on track during the planning process. Looking back, what 7 words best describe your wedding?

Purple, Black, Stone, Industrial, Intimate, Fun, and Personal

TELL US THE PAPER STORY

What brought you to Lion in the Sun? What was your stationery inspiration? How did you personalize your paper? In what ways did you get creative? Tell us the story of choosing your paper goods and incorporating them into your wedding …

We first noticed Lion in the Sun when we moved to Park Slope but hadn’t ventured into the shop until we read the New York Magazine interview with Mel. That issue coincided with our search for paper goods for our wedding and, once we read the article, we knew we had to check out the shop. From when we first entered we knew we found the place and people we wanted to work with for all things paper for our wedding.

Having met at a bookstore, Brian and I knew we wanted to incorporate our love of books into our wedding but we didn’t want the theme to overtake the entire event. We wanted our stationery to make the wedding more personal while keeping an elegant overall feel. Everyone we worked with at Lion in the Sun helped us fine-tune our vision and personalize our wedding. We worked very closely with Ella and, in her, found someone who truly understood what we were looking for even when we couldn’t put it into words. She was able to figure out the right wording for each element and somehow make it still sound like “us”. The entire staff was wonderful at helping us express our creative vision and made the experience one we treasure.

There were three paper elements in our wedding with we felt we could be the most creative and show our own personal style: escort/menu cards that were designed to look like books complete with bookmarks and fake “reviews” on the back; library cards that were put into the books we gave out as favors that listed the important dates in our relationship; and our thank you cards, which included a collage of pictures from our wedding day that mimicked a comic book panel. Each element had a very cohesive feel and yet still expressed our own personal styles. Many of the small touches in our stationery were ideas brought to us by the staff. They were able to help us put our thoughts on paper, literally, and create beautiful, fun and very personal stationery.

We looked forward to every visit throughout our year of working with Lion in the Sun. Every employee made us feel special and like our wedding was the most important event of their year. Brian and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and still find reasons to go to the shop, from birthday cards to our holiday cards. We know Lion in the Sun will be a place we visit for years to come.

SHOUT OUTS …

Our caterer, Real Food Catering was amazing! We loved working with Yen and Gary and could not have been any happier with them. They not only served amazing food, but helped run our wedding night and had the best staff. They added a level to our wedding that we couldn’t have even imagined. We loved working with them and would love to work with them for any other event we have. We were also really impressed with Nine Cakes.  They created not only an amazing looking cake, but a delicious one as well.  So many of the cakes we tried looked amazing but didn’t taste great. Nine Cakes was able to do both extremely well.

We are totally obsessed with this cake topper - designed by the groom and laser cut by Simply Silhouettes' Wedding Shop on Etsy.

We couldn’t be happier for you, Regina and Brian.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring your endlessly creative vision to life, and for being our very first real wedding! xo

Thank You
